Here are some annotated screenshots of what’s coming in our next product – Communications Module for activeCollab!

I will look forward to your feedback!
That’s great, looks better than the current chat module out by US Web Styles. One huge issue we had with theirs (besides it being somewhat glitchy) was that there was no notification a new message had been posted (say if another tab was open/active etc). Is that problem addressed here? Would also be really great to get some integration into multi-chat platforms such as Adium/Trillian. I know for us it would significantly improve the value with that.
Thank you for your appreciation.
1. Notification of new messages: in the build that we are testing, we do not have support for notifications of new messages if you have a tab open. We thought about adding this in a future version. Will see if we can add a basic notification system quickly – changing the title of the window or something.
2. Integration with other chat platforms – that’s not planned yet. It will be too big a project to do that. We feel it’s much easier to chat within activeCollab – especially with people already on the system. People don’t need an additional chat client, and everything is within reach.
We will be enhancing the module based on user feedback, so all comments are welcome!
Looks good. Should make a nice addition to your ActiveCollab modules.
Hey the module looks really good. in fact my opinion would be if this could directly link with skype, twitter, msn, so users can directly use communications from inside the project managment module without any integration to third party such as Adrium/Trillian. Why can’t it be possible to use directly from activecollab so you have everything in one place, and you can also set permissions for users to use each one whether it be skype or msn or twitter. But obviously that will come with time as its a big project.
We have added notification support in Communications Module! It will change the title of the window to “New Message!” – and you can have as many windows / tabs open with different live chats as you want!
Thank you for your comments, and your purchase!
We do not plan to support other messengers just yet. We will improve the live chat interface (file upload support, may be sound notifications etc) first. Then we will look at other enhancements. Again, this will be primarily driven by user feedback and needs.
Really like the communications module so far. I do have one suggestion. When a communication is locked there is no easy way to close the floating side bar. It would be nice if the sidebar is a mouse over only as apart from providing some summary information it really does not add much value and eats up valuable screen space and text in the scenario I just mentioned.
Great work in such a short time!
Will consider that! I thought it would make more sense to just keep the bar visible on a locked communication. But sure, will think about improving this for next release.
Nirav & Co,
One thing I’m missing — is there some way to associate a communication with a project? In particular, I’d like to be able to edit a communication’s properties to associate it with a project — or multiple projects! But at least one project would be nice.
Two more suggestions: First, add an [optional] sound when a new post comes up. Something soft but audible. Second, integrate this with Growl, if that’s possible.
@Max: There is no direct link between a communication and a project. You can select people from that project for the communication and they will be able to participate. In future version, we will make it easier to select people from a project when you are creating a communication. A communication is linked with people. People can be in multiple projects. You would use communication to discuss either one project or multiple projects together with a person.
Sound notification is on our list! May not happen in the immediate next version, but certainly in future.
Growl: that won’t be possible since Growl works at the operating system level, while Communications module is within a browser. It may be possible with HTML5 support coming in browsers, but not until that.
Thanks Nirav. Consider this a request that communications *could* be associated with a project. What I’d see as really, really cool would be if Communications could be embedded into the Discussions section of a project. Again, this would be an optional relation; I also see lots of cases Communication discussions would be a top-level object, not tied to a project.
Growl (and the equivalents in Windows and Linux) could be accomplished with a lightweight client-side app. I bet that would be low on your priority list! Still, we’re having a hard time wanting to use your module because of the lack of notification, particularly push-style notification. So for us so far, Communications have the kind of time-drain that telephone calls do.
We love your work, and look forward to see where this one goes.
@Max: We have planned for adding optional project association to Communications in the next version.
Client side notifications – have this on our wishlist for our desktop client application. It won’t still be realtime though. We are sketching out the details for it. But it is on the cards…
Hi Nirav & Co,
1. Missing file for translation => dictionnary.php
2. Missing more terms for translation !
3. Missing option for caroussel => auto rotate with x seconds for example
4. Missing file attachment option
Good work and nice day,
Thank you for your feedback. We are working on all four items you mentioned.
I love the module but i’m missing something.
1. Ability to add project related chats
2. Ability to add custom types.
3. Option to turn the slider on the dashboard off.
4. A project related tap within the project.
5 Ability to upload files with ease just like 37 signals campfire can.
It would really great if you can combine the functionality of 37 signals backpack & campfire in this module. If you can make a page for let’s say a client meeting. Bind it to a project, upload all the associated files and make a ticket for the meeting.
This way we can chat about the meeting and prepare us in a good way. Thanks to the ticket everyone who needs to attend at the meeting knows about it.
What would even better is the ability to add notes to the page. just like backpack.
If you can tie this into the module you guys have a awesome product here.
So far you heading in the right direction.
Thank you for your inputs. Here’s my feedback:
Project specific communications – development for this is complete. It will be included in the next release.
Adding Custom Types – You can add custom types by adding files in the “types” and “types_small” folder within public/assets/communications/images/ folder. I have a note about this in the readme. But will prepare a video for this later.
Dashboard Slider options – this is almost complete. We are giving three options – full width slider, slider in dashboard, no slider – only list. Will be available in next release.
Tab for Communications in projects – related to point 1. Already completed. Will be available in next release.
Attachment support – this is under development. Will be available in next release.
We do intend to make Communications module more useful for formal / informal communications. There are quite a few interesting features we have planned. And will keep everyone posted about them. But we are not building something like Backpack here – more like Campfire!
Great to read you are working on all those great features.
Quote “But we are not building something like Backpack here – more like Campfire!”
I think you should not build something like backpack or campfire. You should build a combination of those two and do it even better! 😉

We have covered a lot of these requests in version 1.2. File attachments, sound notification, project specific communications, dashboard carousel display options – and a whole lot others!
Thank you for your support and feedback.
Over to you!
Can i set up Communication a way that cliets only see the chats assosiated with projects the user is assoasated with? It looks like this module is global, and i can not restrict cliets to make “global” discussions.
Sorry, I testet with a Owner-company-user, and it looks like its not global when using a company-user.
Yes, you can restrict user to view communication. You can also create a project specific communication where only project user can participants into those communications.
Will this module work on mobile soon ?
Mobile version of Communication module is already in our plan. But at this moment, we can’t say ETA for that.
hello, good modules but why this chat module not have sound ,like yahoo meseengger ? and also mobile support like iphone and android..if yoou have updated ..please contact me to email..thanks
Mobile support is planned for in 2014. As for sound, it only works in newer browsers. What browser are you using?
